Laboratory Science Apprenticeship at York College

Course description

There is a demand across the country for skilled and qualified technicians, and employers increasingly need committed, well trained and enthusiastic workers.

By completing an Apprenticeship as a Laboratory & Science Technician you will increase your skills, knowledge and performance, and become a valuable team member. This will demonstrate to an employer that you have gained the right knowledge and experience to help them in their business and encourage them to invest in you and your career.

Course content

There are five related pathways available (two for the Advanced Apprenticeship) through the framework and the exact pathway to be followed will be decided in consultation with your employer. The principal difference between the pathways will be the content of the Level 2 or 3 NVQ course.

Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

Mandatory units:

• Follow health and safety procedures for scientific or technical activities
• Use information recordings systems for scientific or technical activities
• Maintain effective and efficient working relationships for scientific or technical activities

Optional units include:

• Preparing samples for analysis
• Carrying out sample analysis
• Supporting learning activities
• Preparing solutions and compounds for technical use

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities

Mandatory units:

• Maintain health and safety in a scientific or technical workplace
• Maintain effective and efficient working relationships for scientific or technical activities
• Carry out scientific or technical testing operations
• Access and communicate scientific or technical information to authorised personnel
• Provide technical advice and guidance for scientific or technical activities

Optional units include:

• Plan scientific or technical sampling and testing activities
• Carry out complex scientific or technical testing operations
• Carry out scientific or technical investigations

Additional study

• Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT
• Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)
• Employee Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
• Level 2 Technical Certificate (Intermediate) * This qualification is currently under review and could change
• Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (Advanced)

Assessment

For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, including a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Assessment consists of practical tasks, observations, oral questioning, written questions, assignments and projects.

The Functional Skills are assessed through online tests.

Future opportunities

NVQ Level 4 in Laboratory and Technical Activities or additional training in the workplace relative to experience and role.
