Art and Design BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Preston's College

Course description

Working across a variety of 2D and 3D mediums, this Level 2 course in Art and Design has a strong emphasis on using both historical and contemporary influences to refine your own creative identity. In addition to experimenting with a range of techniques and formats, you will enhance your creative skills and overall employability by working on a number of challenging project briefs.

Course content

You will learn to use contextual references as well as primary and secondary sources to support the development of your own ideas and concepts. Your research will underpin your exploration and experimentation with a wide range of materials, techniques and processes.

The development of your 2D skills will include drawing painting, graphic design and photography while your 3D skills will be challenged to produce sculptures, models and products. You will also broaden your communication skills by working with other student groups to produce interactive media for live college events.

Research into your future career options within the art and design industry is also a fundamental aspect of this course. To coincide with this you will build an art and design portfolio to showcase your skills and aid in your progression into a higher level course of study or into employment.

Entry requirements

You need four GCSE’s at grade D or above including English and maths and a grade C or above in an art related subject.


Continual assessment by coursework which is internally assessed and verified.

Future opportunities

You can progress to a Level 3 course in Art and Design or an Apprenticeship in Design.
