Food Technology AS and A Level at Park House School

Course description

Food Technology encourages students to take a broad view of design and technology, food science and nutrition, to develop their capacity to design and make products and appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. The media has highlighted the impact of good and bad food management, and as a result it has become part of a much wider debate concerning social, health and business issues. For instance, research has shown that dietary diseases are preventable and cost the NHS much more than smoking related illnesses. Food Technology is one of the broadest A Level subjects and can lead to a range of careers from environmental health officers to dieticians, hotel managers to master chefs. To that end, the course has a practical food element which is fun and will develop existing cookery skills to a higher level. The course will also develop the skills you need to critically analyse, plan and evaluate tasks while enhancing your awareness of various social issues surrounding the subject. You will learn to become a more discerning consumer – invaluable in this day and age!

Course content

AS Course Summary
Unit 1:
Materials, Components and Application
50% of AS / 25% of A Level
2 hour written paper
Students will develop an understanding of the physical properties of a broad range of ingredients and components. They will understand why these are used in specific applications, with particular emphasis on the life-cycle of products including manufacture, use and disposal. 
Unit 2:
Learning through Designing and Making
50% of AS / 25% of A Level
Course work- approx 50 hours
Students will apply their knowledge to the design and making of their own project. In this unit, students will consider design and making in a human context. 
A2 Course Summary
Unit 3:
25% of A Level
2 hour written paper
Students will learn about food science, processes and manufacture. To include materials and components, design and market influences, processes and manufacture.
Unit 4:
Design and making practice
25% of A Level
Coursework approx 60 hours
Student will use the knowledge gained in Unit 1 & 3 to design and manufacture their own project.

Entry requirements

Students who hold a B grade at GCSE in Food Technology or a B grade in related subjects such as PE, Biology or Chemistry.

Financial information

The main cost will be for ingredients for a weekly food practical.
General stationery. Specialist equipment and basic equipment like cake tins etc.

Future opportunities

There are many careers related to food and health:- environmental health officer, dieticians, hotel managers, master chefs, food technologists, teachers, nurses, human resource personnel and catering.
