Hairdressing BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Oldershaw Academy
This is an exciting new one year course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on workplace situations and activities because it is a work related course. The course will also help you to build up a portfolio of work. You will develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes which are essential for successful performance in working life.
The Oldershaw School uses two training providers, Wirral Tech based in Birkenhead and MTEC based in Rooney’s hair salon in Wallasey. Variations to the optional unit are subject to the individual training provider
The hairdressing programme is modular covering eight mandatory units and a choice of optional units leading to an NVQ Level 2 Diploma qualification. These units include: responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety, give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation, advise and consult with clients, shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, change hair colour, style and finish hair, set and dress hair, cut hair using basic techniques. Optional units: promote additional services and products to clients, reception and or plaiting and twisting hair.
- Learners with MTEC create a portfolio of their own work from end of year professional photo shoots (only available for those learners seeking employment as an Advanced Apprentice).
- Training days will include theory delivery and the building of a Portfolio of Evidence alongside practical work-based activity in a real salon environment. 60% of the programme is concentrated around work-based practical activity.

The course requires you to have 4 GCSEs at grades E or above. These should include English and Maths but you may re-take them in the Sixth Form if necessary, requires a minimum of 90% attendance.
