Children & Young People's Workforce Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

This apprenticeship gives the learner the opportunity to achieve the L2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce alongside paid employment working under supervision within a child care or social care setting such as: early learning setting eg. pre-school, child-minder, nursery; social care setting with children aged 0-19yrs; in a youth/community setting with young people.

Course content

Learners will complete the apprenticeship in an appropriate setting (early years; social care; youth/community), working in a role under supervision. 
Learners will complete the following qualifications as a part of the apprenticeship framework:
Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce 
English, Maths and ICT Functional skills/GCSE (unless already achieved the required grades within the last 5 years)

Learners will also develop Professional Learning and Thinking Skills
This course also contains elements of Employee Rights and Responsibilities

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade E or above

Learners will need to have regular employment in a suitable setting, or find a suitable setting that will support them whilst doing the apprenticeship. You will need to be employed in a position where you are working under supervision and are able to demonstrate the competencies required to demonstrate level 2 learning. 
Learners will need an interest in, and commitment to working with children, and be willing to undergo a compulsory Criminal Records Bureau check for suitability of working with children and young people


Learners will complete knowledge based coursework at College.
Learners will also need to prove their competency by producing witness statements, building portfolios and undergoing assessment observations in the workplace.
Functional skills and GCSE's are assessed by exam.

Future opportunities

This apprenticeship serves as a progression pathway to the required level 3 qualifications for working in the social care or care of young children and young people sector. Learners may therefore choose to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship 
for the Children and Young People's Workforce.

Alternatively, Successful learners may choose to follow one of our full time level 3 programmes such as the Children's Play, Learning & Development BTEC National Certificate / Diploma or the 90credit Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Q. Can I study this apprenticeship if I don't have an employer?

A. To be able to complete an apprenticeship every learner must have an employment setting where you will be working under supervision with children or young people under the age of 19. Learners will usually need to find their own placement/employer who is willing to support them. 

Q. How often will I have to come into Petroc?

A. It is likely that you will be required in College for 1 day a week throughout the usual College terms.
