BTEC Extended Diploma: Music at Leicester Academy of Music, Technology and Arts

Course description

This two year course is designed to provide the modern musician the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to pursue a career in the music industry. The course is equivalent to to 3 A-Levels (or one and a half if you leave having succesfully completed year one) and suits those who have some experience of playing an instrument and want to develop their skills in a new direction.

If you're age 16 - 18, you'll be enrolled on a study programme which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also need to complete some related work experience and take part in employability sessions.

Course content

This course is centred around band rehearsal, performance and instrumental skills development, but also contains some academic study. You will receive group tuition on your main instrument but are expected to practice in your own time. You will also study units in history of popular music, music business, music technology, musicianship, composition and songwriting.

Entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 (Grade C) or above including English, maths is desirable but not essential. Alternatively you may have a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction level.

In addition, you will need to show you have a suitable level of experience of performance on your specialist instrument or vocals.

Following your application you will be invited to attend an informal interview where you will partake in an audition, this is to support your careers choice and ensure that we place you on the right programme for you.


Modules are assessed using a range of methods including practical assignments, presentations, written essays, projects and phase tests, completed both in College and at home. Although there is a slant towards practical work, there is also a significant academic element to this course, you need to be prepared for this.Please note, this is a two year course and you will need to achieve satisfactory grades and attendance in the first year to progress to year 2

Financial information

This course is free for young people aged 16-18. 

If you are 19+ there may be a small cost to the course and you will need to apply for an advanced learner loan and we can advise you more on this when you come in and see us.

BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels. Upon successful completion you can progress into Higher Education courses. Typical employment includes: Performer, Composer, Community Musician, Private Tuition.
