Science GCSE at Brockenhurst College

Course description

Science and its wider applications form an essential part of the world we live in.  It has therefore become increasingly important to gain a qualification in Science. For example, a GCSE Science qualification is generally required for careers in medical services, public and armed services and for teacher training.

This is the new GCSE Science and it is a single award.

There are several specific reasons for studying GCSE CORE SCIENCE. You may wish to prepare yourself for a higher level science course, e.g. AS/A level or BTEC National courses; you may wish to complement a higher level course, e.g. to support Geography or Sports Science A levels; you may need the qualification for entry to a career such as nursing or teaching or to study alongside a vocational course.

Course content

The course follows the National Curriculum requirements for Core Science GCSE and will therefore be similar to the course you would have studied at school in year 10. For this reason the emphasis will be on improving your previous knowledge base and developing exam technique.

This single 'core science' qualification will provide you with an opportunity to improve your grade in Science.  The subject content will be taught in modules, with objective test assessment during the year, focusing on exam technique and developing your understanding of key scientific principles.  A wide range of source material will be used to improve your knowledge and skills.

Practical work is assessed.

Lessons will be a mixture of practical and problem solving exercises primarily utilising the course workbook and IT resources. Activities will be directed in developing your strengths and addressing your weaknesses in each subject area.

Entry requirements

You will normally be expected to have achieved at least Grade E in a double award Science or Grade D in a single award Science (or the equivalent in Applied Science) to cope with the demands of this revision course.

The course is designed to meet a variety of needs to gain a qualification in a core curriculum subject. GCSE Maths grade D and GCSE English grade D.

Assessment

Three 1 hour papers in the Summer.  These tests contribute 75% of the course assessment. Foundation and Higher Tier levels are available in all tests.

Practical skills are assessed as the CAU (Centre Assessed unit), worth 25%.

Financial information

A course workbook (£3.00) will be required and a revision guide (£3.00) is also available on request.  This may be obtained from the college at the start of the course.

Future opportunities

A good pass can lead to studying GCSE Additional Science or BTEC Applied Science.
