Course description

Why are carrots that particular shade of orange? Why can't you get polythene wet? Because the world is made of chemicals, it is simply amazing the things that chemistry can explain!

Course content

Year 1

Physical chemistry - Atoms/bonding/kinetics/acids

Inorganic chemistry - Periodicity/Group 2 chemistry/Group 7 chemistry

Organic chemistry - Alkanes/alkenes/alcohols/halogenoalkanes/analysis

Year 2

Physical chemistry - Thermodynamics/equilibria/electrode potentials/acids

Inorganic chemistry - Period 3/transition metals/ions and solutions

Organic chemistry - Instrumental analysis/polymers/biochemistry/alcohol derivatives

Entry requirements

B grades at Core and Additional science or B grades in two separate

sciences including chemistry.


Paper 1  35%  Physical/Inorganic and relevant practicals.

Paper 2  35%  Physical/Organic and relevant practicals.

Paper 3  30%  Physical/Inorganic/Organic and relevant practicals.
