Course description

Course content

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Education) is a vocational qualification equivalent to 4 GCSEs. It is made up of a variety of modules which equips the learner with the knowledge, understanding, practical skills and expertise required for future employment in the outdoor industry or, with the appropriate grades and a successful interview, progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Education. Learners will have the opportunity to gain a variety of qualifications which will develop skills, relevant to employment in this sector. The close links that the course has with local employers ensure that students gain a realistic view of the demands and trends of the industry.

  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Rock climbing
  • Abseiling
  • Navigation and expedition work
  • Mountain biking
  • Water Sports

Entry requirements

Learners aged 16 - 19 years old will require a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade C or above or an equivalent qualification. Entry for mature learners without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the faculty


Each unit will be assessed using a variety of methods, including; assignments, presentations, and practicals. Each unit will be graded according to Edexcel guidelines (PASS, MERIT, DISTINCTION).

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the course at Merit level, and a successful formal interview will enable learners to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Adventure. Alternatively learners may wish to seek employment within the Outdoor industry.
