Dance AS and A Level at Park House School

Course description

The study of Dance at Sixth Form will develop and extend your knowledge, understanding and skills which you will need to participate in and communicate through dance in a variety of contexts. You will develop an appreciation of the diverse heritage of dance promoting spiritual, moral and cultural development. The course will encourage life-long learning and give you access to dance and dance-related interests and careers while fostering your imagination and creativity and promoting social and personal development.

Course content

AS Course Summary
Unit 1 Understanding Dance
11/2 hours written paper
40% of AS / 20% of A Level
Section A – short structured questions, 20 marks
Section B – 2 essay questions, 40 marks
Unit 2 Choreography and Performance
Practical Coursework
60% of AS / 30% of A Level
One solo performance of own choreography based on set questions – 60 marks
One performance in duo/trio (3-4 minutes) –
30 marks

Unit 3 Dance Appreciation Content & Context
11/2 hours written paper
25% of A Level
Section A – One essay question on chosen
area of study – 40 marks
Section B – One essay question on chosen
set work – 40 marks
Unit 4 Group Choreography and Solo Performance
Practical Examination
25% of A Level
Group Choreography – set questions set by AQA (2-3 minutes) – 45 marks
Solo performance related to a specific practitioner (2-3 minutes) – 30 marks

Entry requirements

5A* – C passes at GCSE.It is not a requirement that students must have taken the GCSE examination in this subject. The specifications are designed for students from any dance background who wish to study dance in depth. It is recognised that many people gain appropriate experience in dance outside the school curriculum. If GCSE has been taken, a Grade of A*-B is required.You must be totally enthusiastic, committed and physically fit in order to meet the demands of this subject.Interview dance class by arrangement with dance staff.
