Rail Traction and Rolling Stock Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship at East Surrey College

Course description

One year full time at East Surrey College covering nine units of the qualification followed by two units in the second year covered over a four week period. The remaining time will be spent at the workplace gaining onsite work experience and assessment.

 Electrical and Electronic Principles
 Health and Safety within an Engineering workplace
 Mathematics for Technicians
 Mechanical Principles and Applications
 Electronic Fault Finding
 Electronic Measurement and Testing
 Electrical Technology
 Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices
 Three Phase Motors and Drives

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for an Apprenticeship but you must be in paid work for a minimum of 30 hours per week. It is essential you have the right mind-set for working full time and studying at the same time. Having a can-do attitude, being flexible and reliable are also important. You must also be able to communicate effectively with others.


The course will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments, projects, case studies, practical activities and work based assessments.

Future opportunities

Full Level 3 Traction and Rolling Stock Apprenticeship, progression onto Higher Education at the College or entry requirements to Universities.
