Art (Fine Art) A level at Balcarras School

Course description

The course is sympathetic with the structure of GCSE Art. It revolves around units of coursework and controlled tests set against four assessment objectives. As with GCSE Art, much of the practical work is triggered by critical studies with written research acting as a diary of work undertaken. Students will work in a range of media including painting, mixed media, printmaking and sculpture.

Entry requirements

Students should have achieved a grade B at GCSE-level in art.Students must show proficiency in their use of written English,especially at A2-level.


Examination Board - AQA


Unit 1: Portfolio unit - 60% of AS

Unit 2: Practical examination 5 hrs - 40% of AS


Unit 3: Portfolio unit supported by 1,000-3,000 words - 60% of A-level

Unit 4: Practical examination 15 hrs - 40% of A-level
