Functional Skills - Mathematics at Pendleton Sixth Form College
For some students, retaking GCSE mathematics straight away will not be the right path. If you do not gain a passing grade in GCSE mathematics, or acheive a 1 or 2, then you will be enrolled onto a functional skills mathematics course. This will allow you to develop maths skills in realistic contexts and earn qualifications before you try the GCSE again.
What will you study?
- Numbers: Finding percentages, fractions and ratios in given realistic contexts
- Shape: Deal with spatial problems such as designing the layout of a room/house garden
- Data: Calculating ranges and averages and drawing conclusions to solve real world problems
Either a paper based exam or an online assessment
Full time courses are free to 16-18 year olds who are EU citizens
The next step once you have gained Functional Skills Level 1, is to join a GCSE course in order to gain a grade 4 (C)
You will have a mentor who ensures that your training fits your requirements and offers the skills needed for the job
