Motor Vehicle Maintenance Beginner (Entry Level) at Bedford College

Course description

Offered through the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), this course will introduce you to all the fundamental skills and techniques you need to get started in the motor trade.

Course content

The programme will prepare you for work, teaching you the basics of workshop safety, workshop tools and equipment, engine technology, vehicle construction, wheels and tyres, steering, suspension, brakes, transmission and electrical systems, vehicle body repair & painting will also be studied, as well. This will lead to an IMI Entry Level Diploma for the Introduction to Vehicle Technology (Entry 3).

The course is 50% workshop-based and focuses on learning through practical tasks and short written answer knowledge questions. Maths and English is a mandatory requirement of all learners. The selection of the Personal and Social Development (PSD) units within the Entry Level Diploma also assists with gaining employability skills.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course will be subject to a successful interview to include:

  • Completion of BKSB Initial Assessment
  • Success at individual interview & school tutor Report
  • Attendance to the ‘Taste of the Action’ event in July
  • 2 GCSEs in English and Maths, OR Entry Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy
  • A keen interest in motor vehicles.

Assessment

Your assessment will be practical, with verbal questioning and some written assignment work required.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to the Motor Vehicle Maintenance Level 1, or go into employment in the fast fit sector of the motor industry.

Further information

To take part in this course there will be an additional fee of approximately £24 for required clothing/uniform, and £30 for any trips that take place.
