Sport Apprenticeship - Exercise and Fitness Intermediate Level 2 (SPT1) at Barnsley College

Course description

If you’d like to work in a leisure and fitness business – perhaps as a fitness instructor – then this course could be for you. By the end of the apprenticeship you will be fully qualified as a Fitness Instructor and will be able to work unsupervised in a gym, advising customers on their training programmes.

Course content

You will study all the mandatory units listed below and chose from optional units until you reach a minimum of 56 credits.

You will also study:

•Level 2 NVQ in Activity Leadership

•Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing

•Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths

•Level 2 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning Mandatory Units

•Prepare for activity sessions

•Lead activity sessions

•Conclude and review activity sessions

•Support the work of the team and organisation

•Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation

•Support equality and diversity in active leisure and recreation Optional Units

•Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

•Set up, take down and store activity equipment

Entry requirements

You must hold two GCSEs at grade A* to C. It is desirable that you have English and maths at grade 4 or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme.

or successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Sport along with a favourable student review (attainment, attendance,  punctuality, attitude etc)


 You will also require an active involvement in sport, health and /or fitness.


You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical assessments and observations. These assessments will take place both in college and your place of work.
