Travel & Tourism BTEC Diploma (Level 3) at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

This course is equivalent to 2 A-Levels. It consists of 13 units and is a work-related introduction to the travel and tourism industry.

You will learn about the many opportunities in travel and tourism and gain an understanding of the value of the industry locally, nationally and internationally. You will also be enrolled on the Travel Academy which is a suite of travel industry courses leading to qualifications such as Air Cabin Crew, Airline Health and Safety and Computerised Reservations Systems. Some assessments for these qualifications will be held in our mock aircraft requiring students to simulate airline skills and knowledge.

The BTEC Diploma can be combined with an additional A Level.

Course content

You can expect to:

  • Explore the business of travel and tourism
  • Study customer service in travel and tourism
  • Look at the UK as a travel destination and the impact tourism has on the economy
  • Research worldwide travel destinations
  • Take part in presentations and role plays
  • Organise events
  • Visit and study local attractions and destinations
  • Attend a work placement in the industry and develop your skills for employment

Five Grade Cs at GCSE, including Grade C in English GCSE.

There will be two Faculty residential trips during the two year course. We anticipate that there will be one long haul trip and another UK/Europe residential based trip. Attendance on either residential field trip is encouraged but not essential.

Future opportunities

This course provides the opportunity to progress to Higher Education such as HND or degree programmes in Tourism or to follow pathways into employment within one of the many areas of the travel and tourism industry, such as airlines, tour operations, visitor attractions, tourism development, travel agencies, holiday representatives or event management.

Previous students have jobs as air cabin crew with Easyjet, at Thomas Cook, London City Airport, at Eurocamp and as a Neilson ski representative.
