Mathematics OCR A Level at Cotham School

Course description

If you have a clear and logical mind and enjoy the challenge of working through problems and calculations then you should study mathematics. You will extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques and apply these to mathematical models and ‘real world’ problems. You will develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general.

Course content

What will you learn?

You will develop skills in pure mathematics as well as statistics and mechanics.

Within the pure components, topics will include indices and surds, polynomials, coordinate geometry and graphs, trigonometry, sequences and series, algebra, differentiation and integration, numerical methods, differential equations and vectors. 

What learning and teaching methods will be used?

You will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including lectures, group work and independent study. Consolidation through practice will be an important feature of the course.

Entry requirements

NBP16C level 3 entry requirements, including a GCSE Grade 7 in Mathematics at higher tier. Students who achieve a GCSE Grade 6 will be admitted to the course if they successfully pass a pre-entrance test on enrolment day.

Mathematics A level opens doors to many rewarding and competitive careers. You will find mathematics invaluable if you want to study accountancy, banking, economics, engineering, surveying or any science subject. You will have gained problem solving skills and clear thinking, which will support your study in other subject areas.
