Routes2Success (Level 1) at York Learning - City of York Council

Course description

Routes2Success is a new programme which offers young people aged 16–18 the opportunity to gain skills and qualfiications, take part in work placements and to give something back to the community through volunteering projects.

Whilst on the programme you can have the opportunity to complete qualifications at Entry Level 1 - Level 1 in Functional Maths, English and ICT. Employability and Personal Development Skills at Entry Level 2, 3 or Level 1. To achieve the Employability qualification learners must complete 5 units for a certificate and 3 for an award. Units cover a broad range of areas designed to prepare learners for life and work. There is opportunity to get involved in volunteer projects and participate in work placement tasters.

We also offer the Level 1 Caring for Children qualification where students receive training at York Learnin plus work experience in a childcare setting.

There are no pre-conditions and no minimum level of literacy and numeracy is required. Some learners will be eligible for a Bursary and all learners will receive financial support for travel.


Learners will attend 3 days a week for portfolio building. Observations in the work place and during volunteer projects will also be carried out to assess learning.

Future opportunities

You could go on to:

  • Study a vocational qualification at Level 2 work based learning course at York Learning or other provider, full time college course, Volunteering or Employment.
  • Foundation Learning programmes offered by other providers.
