Course content

This course is ideal for students who would like to lead outdoor activities.  It is suitable for anyone wishing to work in or considering employment in sports development or the outdoor activities.  The training will include preparing, leading and ending activities, whilst considering health and safety issues.  You will learn about personal development and the different aspects of working relationships.Optional units include supporting participants on residential work, exploring the natural environments and supporting the development of a sport or activity.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications.   All students are required to attend an interview prior to being accepted onto the course and will need to carry out a basic skills assessment. What we are looking for are enthusiastic students who genuinely want to improve themselves. Academic ability, although important to all courses, is secondary to commitment and a willingness to work hard.  This is a course that values practical skills and the ability to work with others in school and at an external training provider. If you are interested in this course, you must speak to your Head of Year in the first instance.

To support the practical side of the course you will be expected to complete a portfolio of written work.  The course is assessed through classroom work, regular observations, practical sessions and work experience.  You will have access to a one-to-one review of your learning plans and will be given written feedback.

Future opportunities

Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be awarded a NFCE Level 2 Certificate in Outdoor Activity Leadership.  Students can progress into an apprenticeship with a training provider or go on to further study either at a Further Education College or at the South Bradford Vocational Centre.  Alternatively, you may wish to seek employment in the sports development or outdoor activities industries.
