Music A level at North Liverpool Academy

Course description

You should choose this course if you have previously studied Music GCSE and want to develop your skills further. The course will allow you to extend your knowledge and understanding of musical language, styles and genres.

Course content

Years 12 and 13

Component 1; Appraising Music (exam paper)

Component 2; Performance (a ten minute solo and/or ensemble performance)

Component 3; Composition (two compositions, 1x free composition and 1x composing to a brief)

Year 13

Through the course with terminal exams in Year 13.

Entry requirements

At least Grade 4 standard on an instrument (including Voice).

GCSE Music at Grade C or above or Grade 5 Theory and Performance.



An exam paper with listening and written questions including an extended essay.
A ten minute performance on your instrument as a soloist or member of an ensemble.
Two compositions lasting a total of 4 1/2 – 6 minutes.

Future opportunities

This course will give you a good foundation for studying Music in higher education or for pursuing other careers in the Music Industry. It will also help you develop a range of personal qualities including self-confidence, communication and team-working skills, and analytical and evaluation skills.
