Business Studies A Level at Cedars Upper School

Course description

Students are introduced to Business Studies in Themes 1 and 2 through building knowledge of core business concepts (Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Operations) and then applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work.

Breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, with applications to a wider range of contexts, are developed in Themes 3 and 4, requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

Course content

Theme 1 – Marketing and People
Theme 2 – Managing Business Activities (Finance and Operations)
Theme 3 – Business Decisions and strategy
Theme 4 – Global Business

Entry requirements

It is not a requirement that you should have studied Business Studies at GCSE in order to take this course. However, if you have done so, you must achieve a Grade B or above before being accepted onto the course. A GCSE grade 6 or above in English and Maths would be preferable.

Assessment

3 externally assessed exams at the end of year 13 each 2 hours in length. A minimum of 10% of each paper will be assessed through quantitative skills.
Paper 1 – Marketing, People and Global Business
Paper 2 – Business Activities, Decisions and Strategy
Paper 3 – Investigating Business in a Competitive Environment

Future opportunities

Studying Business Studies at A level offers students the opportunity to study the subject at a higher level and gives them the grounding to specialise in a range of business related areas such as marketing, finance, human resources and management, to name but a few. Students can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to go straight into employment in a range of business situations.

Further information

Students will need to be able to analyse and evaluate business situations and make appropriate recommendations. Students will require research skills in order to further develop their knowledge of the business world. Essay writing skills are important and will be developed over the two years of the course.
