Mathematics - Further Mathematics - A-Level at Wolverhampton Girls' High School
Further Mathematics allows students to learn about new areas of Mathematics that are not visited in the Mathematics A2 course. Students will learn about more current mathematical topics and be stretched with more complex pure mathematics.
Progression to Career/ University Courses:
Anyone considering mathematics, engineering or some economics courses at university is strongly recommended to choose this option. It encourages an offer and helps in the first year of undergraduate study.
In Further Mathematics students often have the flexibility to follow a course that pursues their own interests in areas of Mathematics and that will support their future studies.
The only requirement of the Further Mathematics AS course is that students must complete the Further Pure 1 Module. For the A2 course they must complete a minimum of 2 Further Pure units.
The other units can be made of a variety of applied or pure units as long as they haven’t already been studied as part of the Mathematics course.
Students (external and internal) wishing to join the Sixth Form at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School will usually be expected to have achieved a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A*- B, including Mathematics and English Language with a minimum average points score of 48 from her best 6 subjects. Students should preferably have achieved A* or A in the subjects they wish to study at A Level, but with a minimum of grade B. Subjects which are not GCSEs but deemed to be equivalent to GCSEs are not accepted. The Headteacher reserves the right to make the final decision on the application of this criteria.
