English Literature A Level at Teesdale School

Course description

We study AQA English Literature A and at AS the two units are based on the Literature of World War 1. Students complete a coursework folder in which they study the minimum of a novel and a play. The AS exam consists of a response to an unseen text in which wider reading is required. The other question is on the set poetry text. At A2 the area of study is ‘Love though the Ages’ and students again complete a coursework and exam unit.

The coursework involves Shakespeare study and two other texts from different times. In the exam close analysis and understanding of the influence of contexts is tested through four unseen texts from different periods which the students are required to compare. Again wider reading is a requirement for the examination and throughout both courses students are encouraged to read a variety of texts and to keep a reading journal.
