Business BTEC Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

This exciting study programme is designed for people who are passionate about business skills and want to develop a range of personal skills and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

This programme will give you the employment edge enabling you to develop strong employability, maths and English skills which will help you stand out from the crowd.

If you want to gain skills in all aspects of business, then this is the course for you.

You will gain an insight into business enterprise, human resources, event management, finance and explore the exciting world of marketing.

You will be given the opportunity to take part in a 'Dragon's Den' style event and work on event organisation and management for external partners. 

You will have access to the College's tutorial programme which equips you for the world outside of college through money management training, visits to employers, help with job hunting, interviews and confidence building.

Course content

This course is split into 3 industrial projects per year where you will develop your knowledge to successfully work on real life industry briefs that will enable you to become both employable and innovative.

Along with this you will be part of an Employer Based Mentoring Scheme where you will work with a mentor from a local business to help improve your skills further.  

The possibilities with this scheme are endless – students have been given real-life projects to work on, visited their mentors at work and been given opportunities to showcase their work.  

This scheme, along with our tutorial program will help you become work ready as well as preparing you for the outside world with training on money management, help with job hunting, interviews and confidence building.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs grade C or above, including English or equivalent.


Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The course has a different approach to it – you don’t study a unit at a time – you work on employer-led projects.

These projects are run in conjunction with local employers who set actual briefs for you to work on and show you what it's really like to work in the industry.  

You will be showcasing your work with an on-line digital portfolio which you will be able to take to future employers and show off your skills.  Y

ou will learn industry standard techniques and skills to make you stand out from the crowd using state of the art equipment and gadgets in dedicated business classrooms.

Future opportunities

When you have successfully completed year 1 you will progress onto year 2 of the Extended Diploma. You can then go on to further study at Gateshead College such as a Foundation Degree in Business Management or apply for a degree programme at university.

This diploma will also equip you with the skills required for a variety of different career paths, such as sales and marketing, finance, retail and customer service in all business sectors.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
