German AS/A Level at Hazelwick School

Course description

The course will equip you with improvied cultural understanding & transferable essay writing & communication skills which are much sought after by both Universities & employers.

The German economy is the strongest in Europe with an enviable record in invention & innovation.  German is spoken by over 1000 million people in Europe & is the second most commonly used scientific language in research & development.

Course content

Building on the vocabulary & grammar learnt at GCSE, A level German helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in the German language & a deeper understanding of the culture of countries & communities where German is spoken.  During the course you will develop your ability to write & speak in German with accurate grammar & gain in confidence, understanding written & spoken  German in a variety of contexts.

The source material will combine authentic records by natve speakers, German TV, German news & films, newspaper & internet articles.  It will also involve the study of German literature & cinema.  In addition to the time-tabled lessons, you will develop your oral skills through weekly speaking practice on a 1:1 basis with our German language assistant.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in German


Paper 1 - Listening, reading & writing (40% of A level).  Exam of 2hrs 30 mins

Paper 2 - Writing (30% of A level).  2 hrs exam.  Two essays based on 1 test & 1 film from the list set in the specification.

Paper 3 - Speaking (30% o A level).  A 12-14 mins teacher-conducted, externally assessed exam.  Discussion of 1 sub-theme from Paper 1 topics.  A presentation & discussion of student's individual research project.

German speakers are highly sough after by British employers.  German companies account for over 315,000 jobs in the UK & Germany is one of UK's largest trading partners.
