Psychology at Dyson Perrins CofE Academy

Course description

Psychologists use human behavior as a clue to workings of the mind. Although we cannot observe the mind directly, everything we do, think, feel and say is determined by the functioning of the mind. So psychologists take human behavior as the raw data for testing their theories about how the mind works.

AS Level
In module 1 (PSYA1) of the first year we study models of memory, memory in everyday life early social development in attachment and attachment in ever􀂮day life. We also cover research methods, looking at techniques, investigation design, data analysis and presentation. In module 2 (PSYA2)of the first year we study stress as a bodily response and in everyday life. We cover social influence and psychopathology of abnormality.

A2 Level
In modules 3 of the second year we study the evolutionary and cultural explanations of human romantic relationships, the biological and evolutionary explanations of aggression and the biological and social explanations of gender.

In module 4 we look at the clinical applications of psychopathology by studying schizophrenia and phobia disorders. We move onto psychology in action by studying media psychology and addictive behavior.

Entry requirements

We assume no previous knowledge of Psychology however students need to be able to cope with new ways of explaining behaviour rather than accepting common sense explanations. They also need to be able to communicate knowledge and understanding of psychological theories and concepts both verbally and in writing. GCSE English at Grade C is a course requirement. The course requires understanding of basic statistical concepts such as means, median and mode therefore GCSE Grade C maths is required. As students will be handling research data, Science Single or Double Award at Grade C is also a requirement.
