Maintenance Operations Intermediate Apprenticeship at Boston College

Course description

This Apprenticeship enables you to develop skills and knowledge which can then demonstrate and evidence to pursue a career in a multi trade repairs and refurbishment. 

You will cover the following units - 
- Painting and decorating repairs 
- Bricklaying, masonry and drainage repairs 
- Plastering repairs 
- Carpentry and fencing repairs 
- Small scale plumbing repairs 

Whilst attending College you will learn your skills in our on site workshop including a machine workshop, bench workshop, learning resource room and a purpose built skills training area.

Course content

As an Apprentice you will receive on-the-job training at your workplace and also attend day release training at Boston College. 

The Apprenticeship qualification consists of several elements which have been identified by employers as the skills required by a successful employee in the industry. 

These elements are: 
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ICT - Level 1 or Level 2 is a requirement of some Apprenticeships unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ERR - Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which includes health and safety, equality and diversity as well as employment legislation. 

PLTS - Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which includes team working, creative thinking and reflective learning. 

*Vocational Element (Knowledge) - most Apprenticeship frameworks include off-the-job study for a technical certificate which is usually done at College. 

*Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification. 

*On some frameworks, the knowledge and competence elements are combined into one qualification. 

The qualifications you will study within your Apprenticeship framework are Maintenance Operations Diploma Level 2 and Multi Skilled Refurbishment NVQ Level 2. 

You will also need to complete a collection of NVQ of site based evidence to prove you are competent in all aspects of the workplace.

Entry requirements

1 GCSE at grade C or above (New GCSE grade - 4 or above) and 2 GCSEs at grades D or above (3 or above) including English, Maths and Science (or equivalent).

Assessment

Assessment is scheduled throughout the course, through the completion of practical activities, written assessments, two externally set end of year multi-choice exams and gathering of work-based evidence. 

All work is assessed when required by the College-based assessors and  can be re-assessed if required without delay to ensure you achieve your qualification.

You will need to provide your own stationery and writing materials.

Future opportunities

As the course had been developed in response to the skills employers require, students who succeed on this course may have the opportunity to enter the workplace taking on caretaking and maintenance roles within social housing and other sectors. 

Alternatively you can continue their training, to focus and advance your skills in areas such as Bricklaying, Carpentry or Plumbing.
