AS/A2 Level Mathematics at Burton and South Derbyshire College

Course description

This course is for people who intend to study Mathematics at University or people who need Mathematics to support other subjects. Studying Mathematics at A Level is stretching and challenging but can be very rewarding. A qualification in Mathematics is highly thought of by both employers and Universities so will be useful for your future if you are successful. The AS course is designed to build on, and develop, the techniques learnt at GCSE. Core 1 and Core 2 modules include the topics of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.Statistics 1 module includes presentation of data, measures of central tendency and spread and probability. The A2 course builds on and develops the techniques learnt at AS Level, with particular emphasis on calculus. Core 3 and Core 4 develop the work of previous Core modules allowing it to be applied to real world problems. Statistics 2 extends the ability to represent data in bivariate situations, with an emphasis on linear and rank order modelling, and associated hypothesis testing. Core 3 includes an element of coursework whilst Core 4 involves an additional comprehension paper. There are opportunities to attend University Summer Schools, and each year we take students on a trip to the very popular ‘Maths Roadshow’.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at Grade C or above with Grade B or higher in GCSE Mathematics.

Future opportunities

This course can lead to studying Mathematics at University or other institutes of Higher Education. The course is also ideal for students who need Mathematics to support other subjects, or their chosen careers, or who enjoy Mathematics and wish to extend
