Art and Design: Fine Art A level at Sacred Heart of Mary Girls' School

Course description

“Art for me is about doing a subject that I know I enjoy and will willingly take-time to put in the required effort to achieve my target grade, even if I’m not necessarily at the top grade standard. If you enjoy it take it”.

Course content

Year 12

Skills based Project Work:

  • A body of class work developed in a personal way relating to a school selected theme.
  • A final outcome is developed from this work in a similar way to the GCSE.
  • Breadth of study - Lino printing/ Life drawing/ mixed media experimentation.
Component 1. (Mock)
  • For this component, a question paper is given out set by the school.
  • A sketchbook and a body of class work developed in response to the question paper.
  • 15 hours supervised time period
 
Year 13:
 
Component 1. - Personal Investigation
  • A variety of work is produced from a self-selected theme.
  • Personal investigation, which includes a piece of writing (1000 words) related to the chosen theme.
Component 2. - Controlled Assignment.
  • For this unit, an early release question paper from the examination board is given.
  • A sketchbook and a body of class work developed in response to the question paper.
  • 15 hours supervised time period.

 

Entry requirements

Applicants to the Sixth Form need to have achieved a minimum of five full GCSEs at grade C or above as well as the entry requirements for the individual courses.

It is not always essential to have studied a subject at GCSE in order to take that subject at A level. Where no relevant GCSE has been taken, subject leaders may assess aptitude on the basis of other GCSE results or additional tasks such as tests.

For those who have studied the subject at GCSE, grade B or above is expected for entry to most A Level courses.

Assessment

Component 1. - Personal Investigation (worth 60% of the marks)
 
Component 2. - Controlled Assignment. (Worth 40% of the marks)
