Drama and Theatre - A Level at Stoke Damerel Community College

Course description

This course has been chosen to complement the work completed at GCSE level. Practical, creative, good communication skills and the ability to write well are important requirements for students undertaking A Level.

Course content

The course is mostly practical and creative, with units requiring additional written components. Assessment is through a practical understanding of performance texts, devised work, the study of theatre practitioners and taking part in examined performances. As part of the course students will visit the theatre and work with professional practitioners not only in Plymouth, but also across the South West region and London.

Entry requirements

For this pathway you will need to achieve Grades 5-9 in English and Mathematics
with three other subjects at Grades A*-C. You will need to achieve at least a Grade
B/6 in the subjects that you wish to study.


You will be assessed by a combination of practical performance, written coursework (A Research Report and Portfolio), and examination.

Future opportunities

You can progress to a degree in Theatre Studies, Drama, Theatre Production, Acting or Direction. Some of our students go on to Drama School. A Level Drama is accepted for all degree courses. Some of the careers related to Drama include Directing, Creative Writing, Acting and Stage Management, Arts administration, Marketing, Production and Technical work (including Costume Design, Theatre Design, Lighting Design, Performance Sound, Scenic Arts), Education, Law, Personal Management, Advertising, Gaming, Leisure and Tourism. A background in Drama gives you confidence in a wide range of careers which require excellent communication skills.
