Photography Level 3 Diploma at Isle of Wight College

Course description

Anyone wishing to realise their potential as a photographer! One of the most important requirements of this course is a lively enquiring mind and a passionate for all types of photography.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography introduces you to skills in:

  • Photographic Studio Techniques
  • Studio Photography
  • Location Techniques
  • Darkroom Processes
  • Experimental Imagery

Course content

Through a variety of workshop practices, project work and visual studies you will develop your understanding of both digital and traditional (wet) photography as well as skills in visual language and an understanding of the commercial aspects of the photographic industry.

You will develop skills essential to progression to University or employment as part of this programme, including;

  • Good communication
  • Effective leadership and management
  • Planning and research skills
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Self-management
  • Relevant work experience

Entry requirements

You will need five GCSEs Grade C or above including one art based subject, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or an educational background that demonstrates the potential to succeed at Level 3.

At interview, your application must be supported by examples of art, design and photography ability and should include a portfolio of images produced by you on a theme of your choice.

There is a material fee payable for this course per year, which you will be advised of prior to enrolment. You may be eligible to apply for financial assistance to help meet these costs


Working within the mature, creative and exciting environment of the Art & Design department with access to darkroom and photo studio facilities as well as access to Adobe CC and Lightroom, practical and theoretical work is integrated throughout the course with individual and independent work forming a large part of your studies, supported with workshop, lecture, demonstration and tutorials. There will be a major final project at the end of the second year.

Future opportunities

This is an advanced level course.  On completion of year one you will achieve the 90 Credit Diploma in Photography.

On completion of the two year course, achievement at Distinction *(D*D*D*) attracts 420 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A levels). This qualification will take you directly onto a BA Hons. Degree or Foundation Degree (subject to obtaining the required number of UCAS points).
