Health & Social Care A-Level at John Port School

Course description

The GCE in Health & Social Care will allow you to build skills as well as technical knowledge. It will give you a broad base of understanding of the diverse and complex nature of the health and social care sector, whilst allowing you to focus on four specialist areas of:

  • Health
  • Early Years (Care and Education)
  • Care of Older People
  • Individuals with Specific Needs

Course content

The Health & Social Care course comprises of six equally-weighted units and contains an Advanced Subsidiary subset of three AS units. The AS is the first half of the GCE course and contributes 50% of the total Advanced GCE marks. The A2, the second half of the Advanced GCE, comprises the other 50% of the total Advanced GCE marks.

Entry requirements

In addition to the general entry requirement for the Sixth Form, the minimum requirement for the AS course is a GCSE Grade B in Health & Social Care or BTEC Health & Social Care (Distinction) or Sociology.

Future opportunities

This qualification in Health & Social Care qualifies for UCAS points. It supports progression into further education, training or employment, as it offers a mix of both theoretical and vocational learning.
