Hospitality Industry Level 1 Diploma at Southport College

Course description

This course will help you to gain the skills that you need to work in the Catering Industry. You will learn lots of new and exciting practical skills in a well equipped kitchen, with well trained, supportive staff . You will work to improve your English and Maths skills. We will work with you to improve areas of personal skills: managing money, leisure and health.

Course content

There are sixteen units covering a wide range of interesting and exciting topics including: 

Introduction to the hospitality industry
Food service
Basic food preparation and cooking
Preparing and serving drinks
Front office operations
Housekeeping and guest services
Introduction to workplace skills
Health and safety and food safety awareness in catering
Introduction to kitchen equipment
Applying for jobs and courses
Preparing for work placement
Investigating rights and responsibilities
Learning from work placement
Principles of customer service in hospitality, leisure, and travel and tourism
Serving food and drink
Basic food preparation

A full and varied range of teaching methods are used. You will find out about the kinds of jobs available in the industry, develop practical skills and investigate the materials, ingredients and equipment used in the industry. Functional Skills are also an important part of the programme and include Maths, English, practical and team skills.

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs or more at Grade E or a Diploma at Entry Level 3 or equivalent. A satisfactory interview and suitable reference are required. Initial Assessment scores at mid entry Level 2 or above in Maths and English. You will need to show an interest in catering, that you are keen to work hard, arrive on time and work well in a team. We will invite you for an interview to ensure it is the correct course for you and to answer any questions you may have. You will have the opportunity to attend a taster day.


You will complete tasks that show that you have learnt new skills, understand how to use small and large equipment, serve customers and work safely and hygienically. You will be continuously assessed through practical and theory-based tasks that develop into portfolios that are internally marked and externally verified.

Academic Progression: 
An opportunity to progress onto VRQ Level 1.

Career Progression: 
The certificate is an industry recognised qualification and will support you when working within Catering and Hospitality.
