A2 Level Chemistry at Nether Stowe School

Course description

AQA A Level Chemistry is a 2 year course.

Chemistry underpins and helps explain the world around us. It is at the forefront of many topical and important issues.

Course content

In the first year, students explore the fundamental principles that form the basis of chemistry such as atomic structure, bonding, periodicity and an introduction to organic chemistry.

In the second year, students will develop further principles and concepts such as equlibria, polymars, aromatic chemistry, thermodynamics, energetics and organic chemistry.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 or above in GCSE Chemistry and Grade 5 or above in GCSE Maths

Assessment

Paper 1: Written exam (2hrs, 35% weighting)

Paper 2: Written exam (2hrs, 35% weighting)

Paper 3: Written exam (2hrs, 35% weighting)

Approximately15% of the total marks will be for practical knowledge and understanding. Students will also need to complete a minimum of twelve practicals set by the exam board.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Chemistry such as Biology, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
