BTEC Physical Education at Ruislip High School

Course description

This course was introduced to capitalise on a very highly motivated group of students within Physical Education It provides a sound and sufficiently broad educational base to enable each student to progress either to a Level 4 BTEC, a degree or to employment in the Sports and Leisure Industry. The course can be studied alongside, or as an alternative to, A Level PE. There should be a great demand at the start of the 21st century for suitably qualified personnel in this area. It is intended that the Sports course will use each student’s skills and enthusiasm in sport to develop an awareness and interest in science technology, which underpins much of the sporting industry and advancements.

Course content

Year 12 Units Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate – 30 credits

  • Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport = 5 credits
  • The Physiology of Fitness = 5 credits
  • Assessing Risk in Sport = 10 credits
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise = 10 credits

The 30 credit BTEC Level 3 Certificate offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Certificate is broadly equivalent to one GCE AS Level.

Year 13 Units Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma – 60 Credits

This consists of the above units plus the following:

  • Sports Coaching = 10 credits
  • Practical Individual Sports = 10 credits
  • Issues in Sport = 10 credits

The 60 credit BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma extends the specialist work-related focus of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. It is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Level.


his course is 100% coursework and is ideally suited to those wishing to pursue a sport related course at University or employment. It covers all aspects of the subject and is assessed by written assignments.
