Textiles AS/A2 Level at Belfairs Academy

Course description

Students will cover the processes in Textiles from fibres to fabric construction, manufacturing and garment production, alongside the history and development of design from the 19th Century. The work undertaken across all units combine theory and practical applications.

This course has been designed to encourage a broad view of design and technology, to develop a capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. This course combines practical activities alongside in-depth theoretical understanding and can complement a broad range of other subjects.


Course content

AS: Students study 2 core units:

1. Materials, Components and Application

2. Learning Through Designing and Making

Unit 1 is assessed with a 2 hour exam and Unit 2 is the coursework component and will consist of a range of design and practical tasks.

A2: Students will study 2 further units:

3. Design and Manufacture

4. Design and Making Practice

Similarly to the AS course of study, unit 3 is assessed by exam and unit 4 is the coursework component.

Entry requirements

GCSE Textiles grade C. Other applicants considered if spaces available based on interest in Textiles demonstrated at interview.


Assessment is through coursework and examination.

 Unit 1 exam is 50% of AS grade and 25% at A2

Unit 3 exam is 25% of A2

Coursework will be continually assessed as it progresses.

Unit 2 coursework is 50% of AS grade and 25% at A2

Unit 4 coursework is 25% of A2

Future opportunities

The majority of students can use the qualification to go on to Higher Education in a related area, or onto a Foundation course in Art and Design and also develops skills recognised by employers.
