BTEC 90 Credit Diploma In Health and Social Care at Solihull College & University Centre

Course description

The 90 credit diploma is the first year of a 2 year programme of study. It is tailored for those that wish to strengthen their academic abilities and gain a broader knowledge of Health and Social Care.

It is an ideal starting point for those that wish to work in health and social care environments or those that wish to move on to study in higher education in the area of health and social care.

It is also an ideal opportunity for those that have already studied at As level or A levels and need a limited amount of UCAS points in order to apply for University course.

Course content

You will study various topics. The core units of study are as follows:

- Communication
- Equality and diversity
- Health and safety
- Development through the life stages
- Anatomy and physiology
- Personal and professional development
- Psychology and Sociology

You will also be expected to complete some placement hours alongside your programme of study. This is an invaluable part of the course and you must be willing to experience various settings in order to pass and complete the 90 credit diploma.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade C/4 or above or relevant level 2 qualification’s at merit grade, plus GCSE English at grade C/4 and reference. We will also consider level 2 functional skills.


To pass this course you will need to meet all deadlines for assignments for each topic area.

Assessment is via practical work, group work, presentations, essays and discussions. There are no external exams for the BTEC course but students will sit maths exams.

Future opportunities

If you are successful on the first year of this course you will be interviewed for a place on the second year. This is essential for anybody wishing to study at university.

Further information

An enhanced DBS is essential for the course as you are attending placements with vulnerable people. This is needed before you can stat the placements.

You are also expected to wear a uniform both at placement and at college. This is available to purchase from the Health and Social care department.

If you haven’t achieved an A/8 – C/4 grade in English or maths at GCSE or a level 2 functional skill you will be working towards these qualifications during your time on the course.
