Caring for Children Level 1 at Exeter College

Course description

This course introduces you to the skills and knowledge needed to progress on to a career in early years. A range of teaching styles will be used including practical hands-on, formal lectures with group, pair and individual work.

PSD (Personal and Social Development) as well as Functional Skills; English and Maths are a component of the Foundation Learning. There is an exam for each of the functional Skills subjects; English and Maths.

Course content

Units include:

  • Individual Rights and Responsibilities
  • Communication Skills
  • Physical and Emotional Care Needs of Young Children
  • Encouraging Children to eat Healthily
  • Keeping Children safe
  • Physical Activities for children
  • Creative Activities

You will undertake 30+ hours of work experience which is a recommended part of the course.

Entry requirements

You need four GCSEs at Grade E and an interest in working with children. If undertaking childcare placements you also need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly CRB) as part of the application process.


There is an exam for each of the functional Skills subjects; English and Maths.

Financial information

You may wish to purchase a textbook costing approx £18.00. There will be approx 3-4 trips during the year, which are part of the course; costs for these are kept to a minimum and we try not to exceed £120.00 across the year, with a £50 deposit payable in September. DBS screening for work placement is approx £44.00.

Future opportunities

You may be able to go on to a BTEC Level 2 Diploma either in Childcare or in a different area, or you may wish to go on to an Apprenticeship.
