Chemistry A Level at Acton High School

Course description

Throughout this course students are given a solid grounding in foundation Chemistry which will help them to understand how and why substances behave as they do. Through their studies they will discover how past generations of chemists have helped to shape the world as we know it today.

Course content

AS Level

Paper 1, 50% of AS (1 hour 30 minutes)
Theory exam based on the fundamentals of physical and inorganic chemistry including atomic structure; bonding; energetics; kinetics; equilibria; oxidation and periodicity. Written paper with short and long answer questions (65 marks) and multiple choice questions (15 marks).

Paper 2, 50% of AS (1 hour 30 minutes)
Theory exam based on topics including organic chemistry; alkanes; halogenoalkanes; alkenes; alcohols; organic analysis. Written paper with short and long answer questions (65 marks) and multiple choice questions (15 marks).

A Level

Paper 1, 35% of A Level (2 hours)
Theory exam based on atomic structure; bonding; energetics; kinetics; equilibria; oxidation; thermodynamics; electrochemical cells; acids and bases. Written paper with short and long answer questions (105 marks).

Paper 2, 35% of A Level (2 hours)
Theory exam based on atomic structure; bonding; energetics; rate equations; and all organic chemistry topics. Written paper with short and long answer questions (105 marks).

Paper 3, 30% of A Level (2 hours)
Theory exam based on all topics and practical skills. Written paper with questions on practical techniques and data analysis (40marks), questions across all topics on the syllabus (20 marks), multiple choice questions (30 marks).

Entry requirements

At least 2 Grade Bs in Science (Core and Additional or Triple award)

Future opportunities

Chemistry is a great choice of subject for people who want a career in health and clinical professions, such as medicine, nursing, biochemistry, dentistry or forensic science. It will also equip you for a career in industry, for example in the petrochemical or pharmaceutical industries
