Course description

In Year 12 pupils develop an understanding of a broad range of materials, with emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. This specification considers the broader issues for the designer including the environmental sustainability of products and consumer safety:

Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application- External Exam
Unit 2: Learning Through Designing and Making- Internal project

Projects in Year 12 consist of designing and making a piece of jewellery with packaging, MP3 docking station with a flyer and a children’s toy with an instruction manual.

The specification offers pupils the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS.

Unit 3: Design and Manufacture a product of their choice.
Unit 4: Design and Making in Practice- External Exam

Each unit is worth 25% of the overall grade.

Entry requirements

It is recommend that candidates should have acquired the skills and knowledge associated with a GCSE Design and Technology course or equivalent. Grade B at GCSE is a minimum requirement.
