Psychology A Level at Beths Grammar School

Course description

This specification has been designed to provide a broad introduction to the scope and nature of psychology as a science. The emphasis is on applying knowledge and understanding rather than just acquiring knowledge, thereby developing students’ transferable skills of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking.

The specification offers a broad range of topics, with research methods in context and there is a range of topic-based options which bring together explanations from different approaches and engage students in issues and debates in contemporary psychology.

A Level

Paper 1 Introductory Topics in Psychology

Written exam: 2 hours comprising 33.3% of A Level.

  • Social Influence

  • Memory

  • Attachment

  • Psychopathology

    Paper 2 Psychology in Context

    Written exam. 2 hours. 33.3% of A Level.

  • Approaches to Psychology

  • Biopsychology

  • Research Methods

    Paper 3 Issues and Options:

    Written exam: 2 hours comprising 33.3% of A Level.

    Students will study one from each of the following three options:

    Option 1 – Relationships, Gender, Cognition and Development

    Option 2 – Schizophrenia, Eating Behaviour, Stress

Entry requirements

Grade 6 at GCSE in English OR grade 6 in Psychology AND grade 6 in a Science subject
