Music A Level at La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School

Course description

A Level music is a hugely enjoyable course for any students who have a love and passion for music, as well as a track record successful performance in the subject at key stages three and four. Students who typically opt to study the course will have studied GCSE music. However; if a student has passed the Grade 5 ABRSM (or equivalent) Music Theory examination and the Grade 4 practical examination on their specialist instrument/voice then she will be considered for year 12.

Course content

In year 12, students must: perform a recital (short concert) of music; compose two pieces of music and sit a 2 hour written examination in June of the academic year. As with GCSE study, the department expects work to be of a very high standard. As a consequence, students must spend at least 2 hours outside of lesson time working on material. To assist with this, students are provided with specialist music software in school to use, as well as tutorial coaching

Entry requirements

To gain entry onto the A Level Pathway students would need 5 or more B grades in their GCSE qualifications including a C grade in Maths and English Language. A Level students should chose 3 subjects and the ASDAN COPE Award.

Future opportunities

A Level music is widely respected as a more challenging, highly academic, and valuable qualification by UK universities, including many in the Russell Group of universities. Students who are successful on the course may go on to a wide variety of careers. Those who wish to study music at university need to do A level music. Naturally, those interested in a career in the performing arts will find it useful. Very many skills are also transferable, through the study of music, not least increased confidence in performing in front of others, as well as the ability to multi task.
