Biology A Level at Kendal College
On the new A-Level Biology course, you will study for 4 hours per week.
You will complete the AS-Level in the first year and the A2 in the second to form a full A-level.
The course includes a wide range of topics in Biology, and will be taught through theory sessions, practical activities, learning games and online activities.
In year 1 of the course, you will learn about biological molecules, cells, how organisms exchange substances with their environment, and genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.
In year 2, some of these topics will be revisited and developed in addition to further study of energy transfers in and between organisms, the ways in which organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments, genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems, and the control of gene expression.
You will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English Language.
You will need GCSE Biology at grade A*- B.
The course will be assessed by examinations at the end of the year. At the end of the first year, you will take two 1.5 - hour examinations which will include practical skills, and which will comprise the assessment for AS award (but do not contribute towards the A-level).
At the end of year 2, you will take three 2-hour examinations which will include the material covered in year 1; this will comprise the assessment for the A-level award.
Coursework and practical assessments will not contribute towards the final mark, however, if you pass your practical assessments, this will be recorded on your award certificate.
This course will contribute to the requirements for an exciting range of opportunities for further study e.g. you could choose to take degree-level courses in Psychology, Sport & Exercise Science, Biomedical Science, Medicine, Toxicology, Ecology, Nursing, and many more.
This could lead to a wide variety of careers, e.g. Teacher, Doctor, Environmental Scientist, Conservation Officer, Geneticist, Microbiologist, Research Scientist, Science Journalist etc.
