Music A level at Friesland School

Course description

Are you interested in performing, composing and learning about a wide range of music from Bach to Lennon and McCartney?

A-Level music allows you to develop your performance skills on your chosen instrument and compose to your own strengths, choosing your style from a range of options including vocal and instrumental music.

This course is for those students who wish to deepen their own knowledge of a wide range of styles of popular and classical music, who enjoy composing and who have a passion for performing on their instrument.

Course content

You will perform a wide range of pieces throughout the course in a style of your choice. The best four will be submitted for assessment. You will also be required to perform a solo performance of between 5 and 6 minutes. There will be several  opportunities to gain performing experience in concerts and recitals to develop your skills and experience.

You will compose a piece of music 3 minutes long, chosen from four briefs set by the exam board. You will write an appraisal of how you how you have composed the piece including details about development of a melody, harmonic progression and finer musical details.

LIstening and Understanding: This unit consists of a listening exam and written paper, taken under examination conditions, testing aural skills and essay questions on a selection of set musical works given by the exam board.


Entry requirements

B in Music GCSE (BTEC not accepted) OR

Grade 5 ABRSM theory
