Course description

ThIs BTEC qualification has been designed to meet the needs of students, employers and Higher Education.  It provides a range of skills and opportunities for future employment and educational study.  The course is unit based involving studies in a range of tasks and activities.

Practical business skills are developed through each of the individual units where students are expected to undertake extensive research of real businesses.  Methods of research include students visiting local firms, using libraries and obtaining primary data.


Course content

Students will study 4 units covering a variety of topic areas:

Unit 1: Exploring Business (*)

Unit 2: Developing & Marketing Campaign (**)

Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance (***)

Unit 8: Recruitment and Selection Process (*)



Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (Business Studies at 5/M if studied, Maths and English 4.


2 units are coursework based units(*), internally assessed by the school, and then externally moderated by a BTEC Visiting Moderator.  1 unit is an external exam (***) and 1 unit is a controlled assessment task (**), completed under exam conditions in school and externally assessed by a moderator.

All individual units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.  The subsidiary diploma and the diploma are graded in the same way.

Costs will be incurred if any visits are undertaken.

Future opportunities

On to Banking, Accounting, Marketing, Retail Management and Personnel.   Business Studies allows students to move onto Higher Education in most areas.  Related courses include Business, Marketing and Economics.
