Mathematics at Exeter College
This course is designed to help you improve your mathematical skills. You can study at two levels.
1) Improve upon your C Grade – Higher Tier
Some AS Level courses at college require you to have better than a C grade at GCSE Maths (e.g. AS Level in Sciences). Indeed, some courses at university want you to have better than a C grade at GCSE Maths. (Medicine and veterinary sciences are two examples). In this course you will study the Higher syllabus from GCSE in which it is possible to achieve up to an A* grade. In this course you will study more algebra and trigonometry than at the Foundation tier.
2) Improve upon your D Grade (and try to get a C, or better) – Foundation Tier
You will study the Foundation tier GCSE. This course is for students who currently have a D grade, and wish to work hard enough to gain a C in one year.
Note: If you wish to improve upon your E grade, then you should do Functional Skills Maths. You will then progress towards GCSE during your time at college.
You need a D grade in GCSE Maths or a pass in level 2 Functional Skills Maths for the foundation tier. To study the Higher tier you will already have at least a C grade.
A scientific calculator and basic kit of protractor, compass and ruler are required, approximately £12.
It is essential to have a Grade C or higher in Maths for many career and progression routes.
