Media Studies A level at The Dukeries Academy

Course description

Media Studies concerns itself with the mass media: television, film, newspapers, radio, the internet, music and advertising. We look at technical matters of production and we analyse media texts in terms of “media languages”: the codes and conventions by which media texts are organised. We examine the way people and events are represented in the media, the way the media industries are organised and the way audiences are researched and targeted. We also look at the values and ideas that control the way the media operate.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C grades at GCSE (including English).

The assessment will cover written investigations and linked ‘production’ pieces that require you to create your own newspaper articles, websites and short films followed by 2 formal written exams that focuses on the three different media platforms and representation within the media.

Future opportunities

Previous media students have gone on to follow careers in journalism, writing, English, communication, film making, web design, management, production, advertising, marketing and promotion, graphic design, publicity and teaching.
