Rural Pathways- Plumpton at Plumpton College

Course description

If you're interested in practical and outdoor activities, with lots of different subjects to discover, this is a flexible entry level programme ideal for you.

You'll get to develop your social and communication skills, as well as continuing your English and Maths skills. You can choose to study between one to three years to suit your needs.

You can also gain an entry level vocational qualification, other options also include a College Award, Stepping Stones or GCSEs in English and Maths

Course content

Course content 

You'll get to discover loads of different subjects on this course including agriculture, animal care, art and craft, equine, game-keeping and fisheries, floristry, horticulture, outdoor adventure activities, personal and social development and woodland/forestry skills. Plus you'll get to go on visits and outings. Work experience is also a big part of your course - helping you to build on your experience and confidence. 

Entry requirements

You won't need a formal qualification to start the programme, however you will need to show that you have a keen interest in working outside with plants and animals. The course will also give you the option of flexible learning across other study areas within the College.

Facility Fee:

  • Cost for day students- £120 per year
  • Cost for residential students- £200 per year

The facility fee is applicable to all our full time FE students and this is paid annually before you arrive for your enrolment and induction. This fee assists in providing non-educational facilities which include security, sports amenities, membership of the Sports and Social Club, minibuses, Wi Fi access, television room, on-site medical support and free car parking subject to availability.

Future opportunities

Future Opportunities

By completing this course, you'll be able to go on to a 2nd or 3rd year - as you build on the three levels within Rural Pathways. You can choose to join a Level 1 programme if you meet the minimum entry requirements including English and Maths. Another option will be to join our Step into Work programme or Supported Internship.

    • The main Plumpton College site is located at the foot of the picturesque South Downs National Park. Six miles from Lewes, the County Town of East Sussex.

      The College specialises in providing a wide range of land-based courses in partnership with schools, for those in further education and for those in higher education. The College degree courses are validated by the University of Brighton.

      The range of courses cover all land-based provision including Agriculture, Horticulture, Floristry, Equine, Agricultural and Horticultural Machinery, Metalsmithing, Animal Care, Countryside Management, Forestry and Arboriculture, Sports (Outdoor Adventure) and Wine and Viticulture.
