Course content


Unit 1:

Media Concepts


The aim of this module isto introduce you to a framework for reading and understanding media texts--ie media language; media audiences & institutions. You will sit 1 exam which consists of short answer questions based on unseen media texts.

Unit 2:

Practical Production


You will create two linked productions based on a given topic. Productions can include magazines, radio broadcasts, film trailers, chat shows and websites. This will be accompanied by a 1500 word pre-production essay exploring the reasoning behind your design ideas.


Unit 3:

Texts and Contexts in the Media

Media Audiences

Your exam response will be based on one essay response to your chosen case study and a second essay based on unseen materials.

Unit 4:

Independent Study


You will carry out an investigation into your chosen area of the media and produce a 2500 word essay exploring your findings. You will then create a linked production to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of your chosen area.


The course is assessed through both examination and written coursework.

Units 1 and 3 are assessed by examination.

Units 2 & 4 are assessed through coursework.

Future opportunities

This course is extremely useful to anyone considering a role in the media but it needn't be so restrictive. The course aims to provide a range of media competencies relevant to you as a future consumer of media. Knowledge of the media is valuable and is becoming an important aspect of work in most institutions in an information society. This qualification will therefore be of value to you when you enter employment in a wide variety of

professions and careers.
