Barbering Apprenticeship at Buxton & Leek College
The NVQ Awards are National Vocational Qualifications, which provides a detailed understanding of the Hairdressing Industry. The qualification gives opportunity to begin studying for a range of careers within the hair and beauty industry, including Salons, Media & Cruise Ships. The course comprises of 2 awards that are continually assessed via practical assessments and on-line examinations.
You can choose to study these awards as part time course. You will study practical skills and theory with us and then try out what you've learned in our on-site salon. You'll be taught by helpful and enthusiastic staff, who have a wide range of experience in this industry.
As part of the hairdressing course, you will have the opportunity to take part in study visits, which are optional. These include trade exhibitions, international trip, overnight visits and enrichment activities.

You’ll cover two main areas:
1. Cutting hair using basic barbering techniques
This unit is about the precision cutting skills involved in barbering to achieve a variety of looks and neckline finishes for men using club cutting, scissors over comb, clippers over comb, thinning and freehand techniques.
The main outcomes of this unit are:
• Maintain effective and safe methods of working when cutting
• Cut hair to achieve a variety of looks
• Provide aftercare advice.
2. Cutting facial hair to shape using basic hairdressing techniques
This unit is about cutting moustaches and beards to maintain existing shapes using scissors over comb, clippers with attachment, clippers over comb and freehand cutting techniques.
A minimum of 3-4 GCSEs grade C or above including English language and ideally Maths or Level 1 Hairdressing including relevant Functional Skills.
You could progress onto the NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 2, NVQ Hairdressing Level 3, employment or vocational training.
